How to file a Freedom of Information Law request

The Town Clerk is the town’s Records Access Officer.

All FOIL (Freedom of Information Law) requests must be made through the clerk or the clerk’s deputies. The clerk then determines the applicable 5- and 20-day timeframes for responses and gives a copy of the request to the person or persons overseeing the records being requested. This might involve people in multiple departments.

The requested documents then are given to the Town Clerk within the determined timeframe. If any document falls into a category that makes it not FOIL-able, there is a procedure for conveying the rejection. And in some instances, requested documents are provided but with redactions of information that is not FOIL-able.

A rejection of a FOIL request can be appealed in a process that also starts with the Town Clerk’s Office.

The clerk’s office is in the Town Hall at 10 Wamsley Place in Hurley. The office can be reached by phone at (845) 331-7474, option 2, and by email at clerk@townofhurley.org or deputyclerk@townofhurley.org.
