Statement and Report by NYS DEC on Inactive Landfills

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation created an Inactive Landfill Initiative as a result of funding from the Clean Water Infrastructure Act of 2017. This program addresses problems in drinking water caused by inactive local landfills. Among the chemicals commonly found in the groundwater near such landfills is the PFAS family of compounds, including PFOA. Groundwater near the Town of Hurley inactive landfill has been identified in the DEC's 2021 Comprehensive Plan to address these sites (see p. 32 of the link below) has been identified as having these chemical.  Hurley is currently working with NYS DEC and contracted engineers to determine the extent of local impact and proper remediation. Anyone with concerns about their drinking water should contact the New York State Department of Health and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The report issued in May 2021, can be found here.
